Reap the Health Benefits of CBD oil

The human brain is a powerful and fantastic tool and should be nurtured as such. However, life can often get in the way and make things difficult. Anxiety can become detrimental to your lifestyle and can sometimes result in panic attacks or depression.

Well, what if there is a natural way to help cope with some of these internal battles and live the life you’ve always wanted?

If you experience any form of anxiety, panic attacks, or depression, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we’re going to do a deep dive into what CBD oil is, how it works, and how it can empower you to live a more comfortable life. We’re in this together. Let’s get started!

What is CBD oil

Also known as Cannabidiol, it is a natural remedy commonly used to help alleviate ailments if we’re speaking in technical terms. CBD is one of over 100 chemically active compounds found in the Cannabis sativa plant, otherwise known as Marijuana or hemp.

CBD oil has significantly lower levels of tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC (approximately less than .3%), which empowers users to have no worries about feeling the effects of THC. Ultimately, CBD has no psychoactive effect on the human brain, so you will not feel high.

The prime source behind CBD is the oil. The oil is then extracted and mixed with other herbs and oils to create the CBD oil we know today. So what is the difference between THC and CBD, you might ask?

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the element many associate with cannabis. While CBD and THC are both extracted from the same plant, the effects of each are different. Unlike cannabidiol, THC is known to have chemicals that produce feelings of euphoria and increased appetite. If you are looking for a ‘head change,’ THC is the way to go.

Both cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol have one thing in common. They both induce relaxation in the brain and throughout the body. Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, farmers in the United States retain the right to harvest hemp for commercial purposes.

How does CBD oil work?

CBD oil is recognized and appreciated all over the world for its natural therapeutic properties. It is used to treat and manage various conditions such as epilepsy, insomnia, Alzheimer’s disease, and even acne, to name a few. So how does it work?

CBD oil can be ingested or used as a topical ointment to help soothe discomfort. Once it enters your system, it interacts with receptors in your central nervous system that help promote a calming effect. Not to mention, it can help significantly with pain management.

The human body produces two types of receptors: CB1 and CB2.

CB1 receptors flow through the entire body, and primarily the central nervous system. These receptors work in conjunction with mood, emotion, appetite, thinking, movement, and other bodily functions. On the other hand, CB2 receptors are more present in the peripheral nervous system and impact inflammation and pain.

CBD energizes the receptors to empower the body to produce endocannabinoids. These receptors regulate the function of several organs and tissues throughout the body. Endocannabinoids may latch onto either CB1 or CB2 receptors.

Over the years and as technology advances, CBD oil is transforming the pharmaceutical drug industry like no other. Instead of relying on prescription medication, many are gravitating towards CBD, and it’s a plethora of benefits. It has become one of the highly sought-after remedies for those seeking pain relief.

Although, it is essential to note that CBD does not eliminate or “fix” specific ailments. However, it can make managing them much more comfortable so that you can focus on living your best life.

How can CBD oil help me?

Several studies out there demonstrate the benefits of using CBD oil, and it doesn’t just start and end with anxiety. Some research has displayed how CBD affects the serotonin levels in the brain that connect with how you feel, sleep, behave, and digest food. Here are a few ways how CBD oil can help:

CBD oil for Anxiety

Anxiety disorders happen to be one of the most common mental health conditions in the United States. People who experience anxiety, whether it be a social anxiety disorder, general anxiety disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder, can potentially benefit from using CBD oil occasionally or regularly. It helps lower behavioral signs of anxiety, such as increased heart rate, among several other symptoms.

Essentially, it mellows out the nervous system, so you are not in a constant ‘fight or flight response. Another form of anxiety CBD is known to aid is an obsessive compulsive disorder. Anxiety can be prompted in many different ways depending on the person. With CBD oil, you can react calmly to triggering situations.

CBD oil for Panic Attacks

Also known as Panic Disorder, panic attacks are not the same as anxiety attacks. Panic attacks tend to have higher stress, whereas anxiety attacks are more short-lived in comparison. Symptoms of a panic attack include, but are not limited to are shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and dizziness.

In some cases, a panic attack can simulate what a heart attack feels like. CBD oil’s calming effect could potentially help reduce the intensity of a panic attack. If you are looking to avoid anxiety as much as possible, consider taking CBD with no added trace of tetrahydrocannabinol. THC could make your anxiety worse if unregulated.

CBD oil for Social Anxiety

Social Anxiety is another common disorder that can benefit from the use of CBD oil. It brings a sense of uneasiness in social settings and particular environments. A few symptoms of a social anxiety disorder include rapid heartbeat, muscle tension, labored breathing, and stomach aches.

While it is possible to trigger social anxiety for different reasons, it typically is activated due to human contact of any type. Some might take CBD before a public-speaking event or even a small get-together. Those who take CBD oil for social anxiety will potentially notice an improvement in their overall mood in social settings.

In 2011, researchers gathered the effects CBD oil had on people who suffered from social anxiety. Some participants were provided an oral dose of 400mg of CBD, and others provided a placebo. Those who ingested the CBD had reduced anxiety levels. The overall results concluded CBD oil could relieve social anxiety related to activity in the limbic and paralimbic brain areas.

CBD oil for Depression

Depression, also known as depressive disorder, entails experiencing intense feelings of fatigue, sorrow, low self-esteem, and loss of interest. Some may undergo these feelings now and then while others experience them persistently in their everyday life.

At the moment, studies have provided evidence that CBD can potentially help with depression. Some evidence shows that CBD can serve as a fast-acting and sustainable antidepressant to help combat the disorder. Many clinical studies have shown that CBD oil can help improve emotional state and well-being, making it one of the most helpful qualities for anyone suffering from depression.

What are the side effects of CBD oil?

Like many other types of medication on the market, there are always side effects, and CBD is no different. However, the side effects are less severe compared to most pharmaceutical medications. For instance, some who take CBD may experience the following symptoms:

Appetite changes

Weight fluctuations

While CBD can be taken alongside other medications and supplements, it is always recommended to consult your doctor before taking it.

How much CBD oil should you take?

The dosage of CBD oil can vary per person. It is highly recommended that you speak with a physician for an accurate dosage before taking it. Additionally, some people could build up a tolerance to CBD over time, requiring a higher dosage to experience the benefits it has to offer fully.

The amount of CBD taken can also be determined by body weight. Someone who weighs 125lbs may require a different dosage than someone who is 200lbs. Studies have shown that doses of 300 mg to 600 mg are known to reduce the level of anxiety a person experiences, but that is still to be determined individually.

If you are considering taking liquid-based CBD, keep in mind that the CBD oil is mixed with a carrier oil. It is good to take it slow with just a few milligrams to start off with. If you do not feel its impact, consider increasing the dosage little by little in small doses at a time.

How can you take CBD oil?

CBD can be taken in a variety of different forms. It really comes down to personal preference. A few types of products CBD is available in the market today include, but are not limited to, oils, drops, vapor, candy, water, teas, and candles.

Oral. CBD can be ingested by mouth, whether in capsule form, food, or liquid. It is then slowly absorbed through the digestive tract. CBD oil can be infused into various edible items and can come in a liquid dropper form. With CBD oil drops, apply the oil under the tongue for the best effect.

Skin. Items such as lotions, lip balms, scrubs, and other topical products can be infused with CBD. Although, many topical products include additional ingredients, making it challenging to determine the full effect of CBD oil.

Inhalation. Alternatively, CBD oil can be ingested via inhalation using a vape pen. However, it is essential to note that vapor inhalation can carry unknown risks for those with inflammatory arthritis.

The intent is to create diversity and convenience, so there is no one way of taking CBD. Some locations around the United States supply CBD readily available in local stores. Other areas may require a prescription from your doctor.

By ingesting CBD oil, your sublingual glands, located under the tongue, are fully activated, which enables the oils to absorb faster.

What you should know about CBD oil

It’s important to remember that CBD cannot fix these conditions but merely improve your lifestyle by alleviating some of these stressors. You should still strive for an overall healthy lifestyle with balanced nutrition and exercise.

With CBD Oil, it can take on average 15-30 minutes before you begin to feel the effects. Until your enzymes can break down the endocannabinoids completely, CBD will remain in your system on average for about three to four days before it has fully worn off.

The dosage should also be taken into consideration. The higher the dosage, the longer it could potentially take for the CBD to leave your system because your enzymes need the extra time to break it down. Unlike other drugs such as cocaine and heroin, CBD is not considered an addictive drug.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, evaluation of the safety behind CBD oil is still ongoing. Results so far have displayed promising effects, but caution is still advised when taking CBD with additional medications.

Overall, evidence has shown us that CBD, in general, has incredible benefits that can help treat several disorders. While more research has yet to be unearthed, CBD has shown promising long-lasting results as human beings and technology evolve. If you are unsure about the dosage and form of CBD to take, check in with your doctor before taking any new medications, especially if you are already committed to some.

Why Try CBD Oil

Hemp and its 545 compounds hit the mainstream in 2018. For those wondering, “Is CBD oil legal?” Yes! The highly popular phytocannabinoid that doesn’t get you high is federally legal, safe, and easy to use. Consumers use CBD oil for anxiety, muscle recovery, skincare, and the occasional sleepless night. Additionally, people are choosing CBD and hemp extracts over other countless synthetic products already on the market. Hemp is part of the world’s return to nature.

What is CBD?

CBD is an extract from hemp. The plant contains more than CBD. Its trichomes resemble tiny mushrooms protruding from the stalk, stems, leaves, and flowers, including 545 known compounds. CBD and THC are two of at least 140 phytocannabinoids. Also, the trichomes hold terpenes, flavonoids, and essential nutrients. These compounds work together to provide the best, all-natural response.

Difference Between THC and CBD

The trichomes covering hemp plants contain both THC and CBD. Sometimes this confuses consumers, who compare the two. Although they share the same molecular formula, they have different chemical structures, making all the difference in how the body responds to them.

So, in conclusion, CBD won’t get you high like THC. However, you need at least 1% THC to produce any psychoactive response. The small amount of THC in hemp is 0.3% or less, which is the legal amount.

Choosing a Full- or Broad-Spectrum Product

There are two primary CBD formulas. Full-spectrum contains all 545 known compounds, including aromatic terpenes and flavonoids. Additionally, it also includes THC, which makes some consumers uncomfortable. Also, many people want to try CBD oil, but drug testing for work or sports prohibits it. Enter the broad-spectrum CBD blend. It keeps all but one of the 545 compounds found in hemp. The THC-free formula offers all the benefits of a full-spectrum extract but allows the consumer to leave the worrying behind.

Is CBD Oil Legal?

Yes! CBD is legal in the U.S. under the 2018 Farm Act. Updated by Congress in 2018 and signed on December 20 of the same year, it authorizes the cultivation, extraction, distribution, sale, and use of hemp. It’s taken a little extra time to get all states on board. But hemp is federally legal. It’s also seen legalization worldwide, including Canada, Mexico, the UK, Ireland, Switzerland, Sweden, and even Colombia.

Benefits of CBD Oil

The potential benefits of the hemp extract are the primary draw. Consumers use CBD oil for anxiety relief, stress reduction, sore muscles, and as a skincare product to prevent or reduce acne through its anti-inflammation and anti-sebum properties.

CBD Oil for Anxiety

A popular reason for using CBD oil is to reduce anxiety and lower stress levels. The plant produces a calming experience that helps melt consumer’s stress away. CBD may relieve pressure by activating the endocannabinoid’s cannabinoid receptors in the central nervous system.

CBD for Muscle Recovery

Muscle recovery is essential to get back to the gym after a challenging workout. Research shows CBD may help reduce aches and pains that accompany the recovery process. By relieving physical and mental stress, consumers are more relaxed from head to toe.

CBD for Sleep

Experts are still studying how the hemp extract assists consumers with occasional sleepless nights. A few drops of oil may improve sleep quality and help with all-around wellness. Current studies suggest that using CBD oil for anxiety also helps with sleep. When your mind’s not racing, and your more relaxed, sleep comes easier. Additionally, when topical CBD reduces sore joints and muscles from a workout or everyday use, falling asleep isn’t as difficult.

Topical Hemp for Skin Care

Hemp extracts infused into skincare products are the new rage in the beauty industry. If you’re wondering, “Is topical CBD oil legal?” The answer is yes. You can apply it topically, smoke it, vape it, eat it, and drink it legally in the U.S.

Why are people using CBD for skincare? Reports show the botanical has the potential to reduce and prevent acne with anti-sebum properties. Sebum is an oily substance produced by the body to protect the skin. Unfortunately, sometimes too much is released, and it clogs the skin’s pores, which in return can lead to acne. Additionally, CBD has anti-inflammatory properties. Acne is often associated with red, inflamed skin. The two properties combined have great potential as a dermatology product.

CBD & the Endocannabinoid System

How does CBD work? Why is the plant able to help so many? For the past few decades, scientists have been studying the endocannabinoid system. Also known as the ECS, it’s a complex cell-signaling system that helps maintain homeostasis in the body. It consists of endocannabinoids, cannabinoids receptors, and enzymes.

The ECS plays a vital role in regulating all body functions, including mood, pain response, immunity, and reproduction. Phytocannabinoids, or plant-based cannabinoids, can interact with the ECS in the same way as endocannabinoids produced by the body. Experts still have much to learn about the complicated system. But they agree the ECS and cannabinoids hold a lot of potential for wellness.

Another Option: CBD Oil for Dogs

Yes! CBD oil for dogs and cats is possible. All mammals have an endocannabinoid system. Research and testimonials indicate CBD oil for anxiety works for pets and their humans. However, when choosing hemp products for your furbabies, only use oils formulated for pets. Cats and dogs need lower doses than people, and all extra ingredients added to some brands to enhance the benefits are toxic to animals.

CBD oil is a legal, safe, and effective wellness product for people and pets. Hemp is a potent plant with many beneficial uses. Many consumers enjoy relaxing and relieving stress and anxiety with CBD flowers, extracts, edibles, capsules, topicals. Join millions of people worldwide choosing an all-natural botanical to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

CBD oil for beginners

If you’ve heard of CBD oil, you’ve likely heard of its multiple medical applications. From pain management to anxiety relief, people swear by its effectiveness. If you think you might benefit from it, it might be worth seeking out. For anyone curious about trying CBD oil, here’s a quick little primer.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD is the shorthand term for Cannabidiol, one of over 100 active compounds (known as cannabinoids) found in the cannabis plant. The other Cannabinoid that you’ve likely heard of is tetrahydrocannabinol, otherwise known as THC. Unlike THC, however, CBD does not produce any psychoactive effects. And because CBD doesn’t contain THC, it’s legal even in areas where THC products are not.

CBD oil is extracted from the cannabis plant before being refined and processed into several different products in highly concentrated form. This wide variety of products offers the consumer multiple choices as to how they want to consume or apply the CBD.

Unlike pharmaceutical CBD, CBD oil can be purchased over the counter at health clubs, specialized marketplaces, and even coffee shops and gas stations. Of course, as with all products, your mileage may vary depending on what you purchase and where.

CBD oil can be extracted and refined in a variety of ways, leading to different levels of quality and purity. It’s worth going to a specialized store and talking to a professional about what you’re specifically looking to get out of the product.

How Do You Use CBD Oil?

When it comes to using CBD oil, there are several different methods. It all comes down to preference. One of the most common ways to consume CBD is by smoking, which is not only the quickest way to feel the effects, but it also delivers the highest concentration. On the downside, smoking can be rough on the lungs, and you might not want a high dose, especially if you’re new to using the product.

Vaping is similar to smoking but is easier on the lungs, and you’ll be able to regulate your dosage. It’s worth noting that both vaping and smoking require the use of additional products, such as pipes or vape pens, which create an additional expense.

If you’re not comfortable smoking, CBD can also be ingested in capsules, candies, gummies, and other foods. For example, CBD chocolates are a very popular product. If you mix the CBD oil yourself, you can essentially add it to any food or drink.

Eating edibles is generally the easiest and most enjoyable way to ingest CBD, but it’s not without its drawbacks. If you’re looking for quick relief from pain or anxiety, it’s not the most effective method. It can take up to a few hours to feel the effects. Also, it’s harder to get the dosage to where you need it and could require some trial-and-error on your part.

Some CBD oil can be purchased in the form of tinctures that can be placed under your tongue. While this method can produce effects that last for a long time, unlike edibles, there’s nothing to hide the taste of the oil. It might not be for everyone.

Finally, if you’re not looking to eat, drink, or smoke anything, you can apply the oil topically through a variety of lotions, balms, ointments, and other skin products. This is especially helpful if you’re looking to treat pain in a specific region of the body, as you can apply the product directly to the affected area.

The effects won’t last as long compared to other methods of consumption, and you’ll need to apply a lot to get a high dose, but it offers a great alternative to ingesting the CBD orally.

What Can CBD Oil Treat?

Although CBD oil is wildly popular and has been in use for some time, there’s been surprisingly little research done on it. As a result, there isn’t a lot of concrete data on what the oil can and can’t treat.

That being said, we have a good idea of what you can expect with CBD thanks to studies conducted and plenty of anecdotal evidence. For example, both CBD and THC have been shown to relieve pain associated with both arthritis and multiple sclerosis. In fact, several countries have approved oral sprays designed to do just that.

CBD and THC are popular among cancer patients. Not only do they help lessen the physical pain associated with the disease, but also they can reduce nausea and vomiting that come as side effects of chemotherapy. In addition to all of this, animal studies have suggested that CBD may contain anti-cancer properties.

Hypertension, the medical name for having high blood pressure, can lead to many serious health conditions. Studies have shown that CBD oil can not only reduce resting blood pressure but CBD users with hypertension experience less severe spikes in stressful situations. Researchers attribute this to the oil’s positive effects on both stress and anxiety.

Speaking of anxiety, one of the most common uses of CBD and THC is to help alleviate mental health disorders, namely anxiety and depression. It’s also been used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder and it can help insomnia sufferers get a good night’s sleep.

Possibly the biggest benefit to using CBD to treat mental health disorders is that it eliminates the need to combat these conditions with pharmaceutical drugs, which can lead to countless side effects like headaches, insomnia, agitation, drowsiness, and more.

As stated earlier, there’s little concrete evidence, but there’s plenty of data out there to suggest that CBD helps with all of the above afflictions, as well as diabetes, substance abuse, and various forms of psychosis.

Hopefully, this gives you a good idea of what CBD oil is and how it could benefit you. Research is being done all the time, so new uses are constantly being discovered and CBD use is growing wider by the day. It’s a safe and effective alternative to many pharmaceutical medications.

Buying CBD on Amazon? Read this first

CBD oil from Amazon

The rise in popularity of CBD has led to considerable consumer confusion regarding where you can purchase this therapeutic remedy. Like many online shoppers, you may first gravitate towards buying CBD on Amazon. I don’t blame you. With Amazon’s next day prime shipping, and quick click purchases it’s no wonder why Amazon is the global leader in the online marketplace. However, a word of caution if you are considering buying CBD oil from Amazon.

The bottom line is Amazon does NOT sell real CBD oil. This may come as a surprise to many who see hundreds of listings for products on Amazon with labels like “hemp oil” or “hemp extract.” Let’s set the record straight once and for all. We will first start by explaining what the difference is between Hemp oil vs. CBD oil.

What is Hemp Seed Oil?

Hemp oil or Hemp seed oil is extracted from the seed of the hemp plant. It has been recognized as a health supplement for many years and although it does have some great benefits, it is NOT CBD oil. Hemp oil does not contain the vital Cannabinoids that are present in CBD oil. What are cannabinoids? Cannabinoids are the natural chemical compounds of marijuana and hemp plants that are derived from the plant material. Cannabinoids are the compounds that contain all the health benefits and the reason why CBD oil has been so effective at helping people with arthritis inflammation, anxiety, and other ailments.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD is one of the most popular cannabinoids along with THC. THC is the cannabinoid that gets you high, and CBD is the cannabinoid that helps you heal. CBD has sparked a new holistic health revolution because it is non-toxic, non-habit forming, and has a plethora of health benefits including help with anxiety, depression, pain management, seizures, and overall well being.

Health Benefits of CBD oil

These amazing health benefits are present only in the cannabinoids of the plant, not the seed. This is an important distinction when shopping for CBD oil, to make sure that what you are buying is actually really CBD oil and not Hemp seed oil. Hemp seed oil is considerably cheaper and because it does not use plant material you will find it readily available on sites such as Amazon. There is nothing inherently wrong with hemp seed oil, it is just important to remember that hemp seed oil does NOT contain active cannabinoids so therefore it is NOT CBD oil.

Amazon does NOT sell CBD

The problem is that all the products listed on Amazon create confusion when consumers are led to believe that the listed products are actually CBD oil. Keep in mind that it is against company policy for Amazon to sell CBD. You will not find any real CBD from Amazon sellers. What you will find is thousands of sellers, listing Hemp oil products and trying to get you to believe that it is actual CBD.

So if you are shopping for CBD, please remember that you will not find any real CBD on Amazon. Instead, we recommend purchasing your CBD oil from organic certified USA manufacturers that maintain strict quality guidelines for purity and safety. You can shop for authentic CBD oil here and have the peace of mind that you are buying real CBD from real USA farms.

Does Amazon sell CBD oil?

In this article, we will be discussing a common question regarding whether it is safe or even legal to buy CBD on Amazon. The answer to this question is No. You cannot buy CBD oil on Amazon

So you may be wondering then why is it that when you type in “CBD oil” in the Amazon search box do you get hundreds if not thousands of product results? This is a great question.

The reason for this is that the products that are showing up on Amazon are something called Hemp Seed Oil. Hemp seed oil is NOT CBD oil.

This is very important to understand and something that may cause a lot of confusion. The products being advertised on Amazon may use terms like “Hemp oil,” or “Hemp extract” but this is not CBD. Although hemp seed oil is a great natural supplement, it does not contain the therapeutic health benefits that CBD oil has.

What is CBD?

CBD is one of the over 100+ active chemical compounds or cannabinoids that are found in the plant material of either Hemp or Marijuana. CBD has gained popularity over the years because of its therapeutic health benefits which can help with stress, anxiety, inflammation, and pain management. The holistic health community has fallen in love with CBD because of its effectiveness without the nasty side effects of traditional prescription pills.

Where does CBD come from?

CBD is extracted from either the Marijuana or Hemp plant. The 2018 Farm Bill passed in the U.S. helped to propel the CBD industry forward because American farmers are now able to farm and cultivate Hemp without any legal repercussions.

Prior to this bill, most of the U.S. CBD and Hemp-derived products were being imported from Canada. Now because of its legal status here in the U.S most CBD manufacturers are sourcing their CBD oil from Hemp because it is completely legal unlike Hemp’s cousin the Marijuana plant.

You can also derive CBD oil from Marijuana, but there are more restrictions because Marijuana has higher levels of THC. Due to this fact, if the CBD is extracted from Marijuana then you can’t buy it online, you can only purchase at your local medical marijuana dispensary.

Yes, CBD is legal in America

As long as the Hemp contains less than .3% of THC, then it is completely legal to be used to create all types of CBD products including tinctures, creams, gummies, etc. In case you’re wondering, THC is a chemical compound in Marijuana that gives you that euphoric or “high” feeling. The great thing about CBD is that it has less than .3% THC, which means you will never get high from taking CBD.

The passing of the 2018 Farm Bill has opened up the floodgates to hundreds of new CBD companies, manufactures, and brands jumping in to capitalize on this billion-dollar emerging health market. At the same time, this has created a somewhat grey area of misinformation and legality that has baffled many health consumers.

You can’t buy CBD on Amazon

One of the biggest areas of confusion is between CBD oil vs. Hemp oil. Amazon sellers are taking advantage of this confusion by listing their products as “hemp extract,” or “hemp oil” tricking consumers into thinking their products are actual CBD. Don’t be fooled!

If you’re looking to buy CBD oil on Amazon, you must know that Amazon does NOT sell CBD oil.  It is illegal and against their policies. Your best bet is to only purchase CBD oil from the authorized U.S. manufacturers that maintain the highest standards for safety and quality. You can find a comprehensive list of all the top U.S. organic Hemp-derived CBD oil manufacturers here.

A Brief History of CBD

Although CBD oil is getting plenty of mainstream attention, it doesn’t mean that it’s completely new. In fact, CBD has a long fascinating history. The first documented use of medicine derived from cannabis dates all the way back to 2737 BC. While the cannabis plant has been around for a long time, the recognition that it’s composed of unique compounds called cannabinoids is much more recent.

During the rise of modern medicine, Cannabis was largely unrecognized by the medical community due to the lack of scientific evidence of how it worked or even if it worked at all. In 1839 however, an Irish physician and medical researcher named William O’ Shaughnessy published a study exploring the effects of Cannabis. He also described possible medical applications of which helped set the stage for future research.

The Discovery of Cannabinoids

In 1940, chemist Robert Kahn identified the structure of the Cannabis plant in an individual cannabinoid called CBN. Then in 1942, American chemist Roger Adams and his colleagues successfully isolated a cannabinoid for the first time, Cannabidiol (CBD). Two years later, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was isolated for the first time.

You will likely recognize THC as a psychoactive compound of the plant that causes euphoric effects. That’s going to be important later so please keep that in mind. Now once scientists understood that there were multiple cannabinoids and were able to isolate them, research into how individual cannabinoids worked quickly grew.

In 1946, Dr. Walters conducted tests using Cannabis on lab animals. We know that THC caused psychoactive effects on the animals while CBD did not. Then in 1963, Dr. Rafael McCullum took this research a step further and discovered the chemistry of CBD followed by the stereochemistry of THC. One year later this revealed a direct relationship between THC and the euphoric effects associated with cannabis and distanced CBD from the mind-altering compound.

Cannabis Stigma Stalls Research

Unfortunately, the stigma surrounding the Cannabis plant due to the psychoactive euphoric effects often caused by THC led to restrictions on the availability of Cannabis even for academic purposes.

It became very difficult to do research on Cannabis because possessing it even for academic purposes was prohibited for many years. Scientific research on Cannabis and CBD was held back.  While Cannabis research may have been hindered by stigma, it wouldn’t be defeated by it.

In 1978, New Mexico became the first state to pass legislation allowing the medical use of cannabis in some form. They did so through the Controlled Substance Therapeutic Research Act which allowed the use of Cannabis through a research program approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Then in 1996, California became the first state to legalize medical marijuana with the passing of proposition 215. Many other states soon followed suit, and with the legalization of medical marijuana came legal access to Cannabis and that allowed researchers to dive deeper into the study of CBD.

Current State of CBD

Let’s jump ahead to the current state of CBD.  The 2018 Farm Bill laid the groundwork for the legalization of cultivating hemp and its products such as CBD. This bill outlined the rules and regulations surrounding the growing and cultivation of hemp and that by law it must contain less than 0.3 percent THC. This means CBD is federally legal as long as it is hemp-derived and contains 0.3 percent THC or less.

With the widespread legalization of hemp-derived CBD,  has come renewed interest and CBD oil is now one of the most popular products in the health and wellness industry.

CBD is widely available and more and more research is being done. These studies will likely lead to more recognition of how CBD can help with people’s health and lifestyles. We’re confident that for many years to come, CBD will not just be a popular supplement, but one that offers a multitude of health benefits for all types of people around the world.

CBD oil Basics

CBD is the shortened way of saying cannabidiol which is a naturally occurring compound in Cannabis Sativa which is also known as a cannabinoid. Cannabinoids are only found in cannabis and most of the CBD that you’ll find on the market in Europe and in North America is actually extracted from Hemp.

Hemp is a type of Cannabis, and it contains very low amounts of THC with only .3% in the USA and .2% in Europe. Hemp is a very interesting plant. Not only does it have very strong fiber, but it also has incredibly nutritious hemp seed oil from its seeds and hemp protein. It’s also bioremediation which means that it sucks out contaminants from the soils. This is really important when you’re sourcing your CBD oil.

Ideally, your CBD should come from certified organic hemp because imagine if your hemp was grown on contaminated soil, it would be literally soaking up those contaminants, and then you’d be taking it in for your health which doesn’t make sense. CBD is non-intoxicating so you’re not going to get stoned. It is legal because it contains only very trace amounts of THC or sometimes none at all. The World Health Organization has declared it to be safe, non-toxic, and non-addictive.

For anyone new to taking cannabis or hemp products, it’s always a concern if you are going to get addicted. This is not going to happen with CBD. In fact, one of the areas that are being researched is using CBD to help people with cravings coming off their addictions.

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil could be described as a hemp extract so what that means is you have CBD because that’s the most abundant compound but you also have a host of other naturally occurring compounds that are found in hemp. There are also terpenes which are the aromatic molecules that are found in nature so not just in cannabis, it’s in all aromatic plants and flowers. Cannabis has a very distinctive smell, but it doesn’t come from the cannabinoids, it comes from the terpenes.

There are terpenes that are in cannabis but are also in other plants. For example, lionel which is found in lavender is responsible for the relaxing effect. Limonene which is found in citrus fruits has an elevating mood effect. You will also find some flavonoids which are powerful antioxidants.

With full-spectrum CBD oil, you’ll get all these kinds of molecules together which create a synergy which is known as the Entourage Effect. So using the movie analogy, you have the protagonist the main actor but you also need the rest of the cast and supporting actors for the movie to work. The same goes for CBD oil.  You’ve got the protagonist which is the CBD and then you’ve got its entourage of other players which are supporting its role and potentiating its effect.

Types of CBD oils

There is Full Spectrum, Broad spectrum, and CBD isolates. Full-spectrum has all the cannabinoids and terpenes intact, while broad-spectrum is exactly the same except all the THC is taken out. For those that are worried about coming up positive on a drug test, there is also a product called CBD isolate. CBD isolate has 0% THC and is essentially concentrated CBD. All the other cannabinoids and terpenes have been removed. Using this method, you will forgo the benefits of the Entourage Effect. If you are not concerned about taking a drug test then it is recommended to go with a Full Spectrum CBD oil.

How CBD oil can help bodybuilders

I’m gonna go over three ways that you can use CBD oil as a sports supplement to help in your bodybuilding training regimen. Many athletes are turning to CBD to aid with muscle recovery training and a fitness sports supplement regimen in general. My problem with this is that you see a lot of people touting some benefits that may or may not be true or they may be a little confusing. For now, we’re gonna get into the bodybuilding aspects of CBD.

Benefit #1

The first benefit is going to be anti-catabolic properties. To understand this better you should understand what cortisol is and how the levels affect your body. Cortisol is a hormone that reduces protein synthesis and actively prevents tissue growth so basically prevents your body from growing muscle tissue. Excessive cortisol levels are usually the culprit when those who workout diligently fail to achieve the muscle-building results expected from the rigorous fitness routine.

Cortisol levels are normally higher in the morning and they taper off towards the night time.  This explains why you actually recover better when you’re sleeping at night when cortisol levels are balanced. They can actually be beneficial to your body so taking both post and pre-workout CBD supplements can help maintain your cortisol levels when you’re doing a high-stress activity such as physical training.

Benefit #2

The next bodybuilding CBD benefit is going to be the fight-or-flight stress response. This response is the physiological reaction that occurs in the presence of something that is a threat or a challenge either physically or mentally. So I know what you’re thinking–a threat in the gym. How do I face threats when I’m in the gym?

The reality is your body doesn’t know the difference between someone approaching you to fight or where you’re looking at heavy weights on a barbell or you’re about to hit a PR on the bench or you’re going to put yourself through painful yoga.

Your body physiologically reacts the same way as if you were going to put yourself through a stressful workout versus if you were about to get into a fight. So physiologically, you’re gonna have a similar reaction.

In both examples, your body is going to have an increased heart rate, increased anxiety, higher blood pressure, and muscle tension.  It’s the sort of that feeling you get when you’re about to go lift something heavy. So how does CBD combat this stress response?

CBD helps activate receptors in your central nervous system that deals with the response to stress. With these receptors open, your mind/muscle connection increases tenfold.

Imagine when you’re going to do a squat and you’re going halfway down and you’re stuck. You don’t know if it’s a pain. If it’s muscle tightness, you don’t know what it is but you stop you take a deep breath.  You sort of reset yourself and then you could push all the way through and you continue with the reps.

That’s a perfect example to explain how CBD reacts towards your central nervous system.  It essentially relieves the tension and the anxiety that you get when you’re going through heavy or difficult movements.

Benefit #3

The third benefit is going to be how CBD can improve your quality of sleep. But does sleep have to do with what you’re doing in the gym?  When you get enough quality sleep, it gives your body time to recover, repair, and build muscle.

When you get quality sleep your body actually produces something called growth hormones. During our childhood, growth hormone actually helps us grow hence its name. As adults, growth hormone helps you build lean muscle and repair torn muscle that you break up when you train.

The growth hormone is essential for good athletic recovery. Most people think that you grow muscle while you’re in the gym but actually, that’s not the case. You grow muscle while you’re resting and while you’re sleeping at night.  So where does CBD play its role in your muscle recovery?

CBD helps you sleep because it can alleviate the symptoms that complicate sleep namely anxiety, stress, and pain. CBD relaxes your central nervous system giving your body a calming effect and can even help you with lower back pains and arthritis.

Using CBD may be helpful for improving sleep even if you don’t suffer from anxiety because CBD has been found to interact with the receptors in your body that actually regulate your sleep and wake cycles.  This prevents your muscles from breaking down which improves your training by increasing your mind muscle connection and helping you sleep better.

That’s how bodybuilders can benefit from using CBD as a supplement. Keep in mind this is to supplement everything else that you’re doing to promote a healthy lifestyle. Using CBD isn’t going to be a magic success pill. What CBD will do is help complement your existing lifestyle regimen and help your body achieve a state of balance or homeostasis which is the foundation of wellness. CBD’s positive effect on sleep, anxiety, and cortisol levels can help play an integral role in your bodybuilding journey.
