Obesity is an epidemic in North America. Even though we know it’s due to a lack of movement and junk food, the root causes in each person are very different. This could be anything from leptin resistance and metabolic syndrome, psychological addiction, to a combination of all three. When we heal, we want to target the root cause of the problem and not generalize. So let’s talk about how CBD oil can help you target the root cause of obesity or being overweight.
CBD oil helps you regulate appetite. Even though we know that THC causes the munchies, CBD has the opposite effect. If somebody has an excessive appetite, it should balance it out and if somebody has no appetite, it will increase it. There are two main hormones that control your appetite, Ghrelin, and Leptin.
Ghrelin is the hunger hormone, and Leptin is the satiety hormone. There are some studies that show that CBD oil can help you increase the levels of leptin so you will feel fuller for longer. CBD oil can potentially help you manage appetite and that’s the first step towards healthier eating.
In our body, we have fat cells and fat cells don’t just hang out doing nothing. Fat cells are metabolically active so they produce hormones, they burn energy, and they have different functions. There are two different types of fat. There are the brown adipose tissues and then there’s the white adipose tissue.
Brown adipose is that color because there is a lot of mitochondria in it. Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cells so it burns a ton of energy. CBD oil actually helps you convert the white fat cells into more metabolically active brown fat cells thus increasing your metabolism. More studies will need to be done but that is the hypotheses that have been formulated so far.
3. Management of Cortisol
Cortisol is a stress hormone and as we all know stress is bad for us but actually stress makes us gain weight. Cortisol hormones will actually lower your levels of testosterone. Testosterone is crucially important in weight loss as it’s the muscle building and fat burning hormone. So when we lower testosterone and increase estrogen, you will store more fat and actually burn muscles for energy. Therefore, lowering cortisol and lowering your stress levels helps manage the muscle-building fat storage process.
CBD oil helps you sleep through the night and helps you fall asleep faster. Surprisingly, one of the biggest reasons a lot of people gain weight is in the lack of sleep. Studies have shown that lack of sleep can cause more leptin resistance. As we know leptin is the satiety hormone so basically when you’re not sleeping, you’re not feeling full.
I don’t know if you’ve ever experienced jet lag, or when you haven’t slept the night before and then you wake up in the morning and no matter how much food you eat you just don’t feel full. I experience that all the time personally so for me it’s very obvious when you don’t sleep you’re just hungry all the time. So if a person doesn’t sleep well, or even if they can’t fall asleep, that will really negatively affect their weight.
CBD helps bring your body into balance or homeostasis. Homeostasis is which is when all your internal systems are working synergistically and in optimum balance. So whatever root cause there is for your weight gain, CBD oil will help you manage that. Again, whether it’s hormonal imbalances, appetite, or psychological addictions, CBD oil helps your body achieve a state of homeostasis.
Those are the five main reasons why CBD oil can help you manage your weight. That being said, as a holistic nutritionist, I do believe that weight loss should come from a place of self-love and trying to take care of yourself and making yourself a priority. More satisfaction instead of deprivation. A lot of times the idea of losing weight comes from a place of not liking your body, or not being happy at where you are, or trying to punish yourself. That’s a non-sustainable negative approach to weight loss.
I believe more in the long term approach of taking care of your body and nourishing yourself. Again with CBD, it’s more of the nourishing approach. How can I help my body be in balance and actually come to the perfect weight that my body’s supposed to be at? What that perfect weight is it’s really up to you, we are all very different especially as women. At the end of the day, we all need to accept our body for what it is and come from a place of acceptance and self-love and that’s how your body will come in balance.
