CBD and Coffee

In this article, we will discuss a subject that’s near and dear to my heart—CBD and coffee.

One of the questions that I get asked all the time is about CBD and coffee interaction. Many people think that the CBD relaxes you and the caffeine gets you all amped up and ready for the day so what happens when you put the two together?

What happens is something beautiful. One of the things that caffeine does is it binds with your brain’s adenosine receptors.  Adenosine is normally responsible for preparing your body for sleep so you know it’s something that grows throughout the day and increases your desire for sleep. 

When you drink coffee, the caffeine then goes and binds with that adenosine receptor preventing your own adenosine from connecting there and thereby preventing that drowsiness from kicking into gear.


When caffeine binds to that adenosine receptor actually the opposite occurs–your neuron activity is increased and adrenaline is released and that’s why you feel energetic, aware, and awake. That sensation that we all know and love from a nice cup of coffee that is actually adrenaline kicking in.

Unfortunately, there are some negative side effects that can be experienced with that increase in adrenaline. You may know that adrenaline is responsible for that fight-or-flight response, well that’s your sympathetic nervous system kicking into gear.

For people that might be sensitive to caffeine, or that may have had a few too many cups throughout the day, that can induce a sense of jitteriness or edginess that could be very uncomfortable.

Luckily, one of the many things that CBD oil does within the body is to stimulate your serotonin receptors which produce a bit of a calming, anti-anxiety sensation. Therefore, this counteracts the effects of that negative fight-or-flight response caused by the adrenaline and the caffeine and you can still get the mental clarity minus the jittery edginess.

That’s just a brief glimpse into the science behind why CBD and coffee work well together. In summary, it’s because the caffeine and coffee put your body into a bit of fight-or-flight response and the CBD actually has anti-anxiety effects to calm that sensation.

Another reason that CBD and coffee go so well together is a little bit more cultural or habitual. Many people turn to coffee and espresso-based drinks throughout the day to keep them going, it’s part of their daily ritual and something that they can’t imagine living without. Caffeine is one of humanity’s favorite drugs.  

So what better place to add something good into your daily routine by slipping some CBD into your coffee or any drink that you otherwise regularly consume.  It’s such a simple way to do something beneficial for yourself without having to create a new daily routine. 

It’s the same thing as if you’re already taking a bunch of capsules or supplements.  If you just add a CBD supplement to your routine,  you’re not changing or creating new habits. At the end of the day,  the best type of CBD product is one that you’re actually going to take consistently. 

From another perspective, just looking at the specialty coffee and cafe industry,  we’re already starting to see a bit more of a customizable option appear on the menus where it’s not just coffees anymore. There are things like turmeric lattes, matcha lattes, you can add collagen plant-based milk, and all these different things to fine-tune the exact experience that you’re looking for and CBD is no exception.

CBD is really just another superfood that can give the user consuming that beverage certain types of benefits that they’re looking for.  However, most of the CBD out there is in oil form as in tinctures.  The oil is fine for those applications,  but as soon as you swallow CBD oil into the stomach the absorption rate or the bioavailability really gets called into question.

Unfortunately, CBD oil itself has very low absorption rates. We’re talking 10-20% so if you think you’re taking a 20-milligram dose, you might actually only be getting 2 milligrams absorbance to your body.

Therefore, if you’re going to be doing CBD coffee drinks or any CBD specialty drink,  it needs to be in some form that is converted for full absorption in the stomach. 

Ultimately, it needs to have increased bioavailability, and using a water-soluble form of CBD powder is the best way to go about it. The CBD water-soluble powder is designed for mixing into drinks effectively and also being effectively absorbed in the stomach. 

In summary, CBD and caffeine actually balance each other out so you still get the upbeat energetic effects but you’re not going to be anxious and feeling overwhelmed.
