In the following article we will be covering:
*A brief overview of CBD
*Reviewing the seven main CBD benefits
*CBD dog treat dosage guidelines
*Which CBD dog brands you can actually trust
CBD stands for Cannabidiol and the cannabis plant has hundreds of cannabinoids which have many potential benefits. What’s great about the pet products with CBD is that many contain zero THC which means they have no negative psychoactive effects.
CBD is actually very well tolerated by pets and has extremely rare cases of side effects so it is very safe. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system in dogs and all mammals have the system.
If you really want to learn everything about this system please check out our article on the endocannabinoid system here.
The endocannabinoid system helps manage many different processes and CBD that your dog consumes interacts with this system and this has been shown to produce many different health benefits.
One of the main CBD health benefits is as a powerful painkiller and studies show that CBD can help manage pain in many different ways. A lot of pet owners are using CBD for their dogs because they’re going through pain whether it’s from a surgery, from an illness, or lack of mobility pain in their joints.
Perhaps one of the best known medicinal uses for CBD is its ability to help control seizures tremors and things of that nature. That’s because CBD it’s a natural anticonvulsant. So if your dog has seizures or epilepsy many dogs have seen really great results after using CBD, whether that’s reducing the frequency and/or the severity of the seizures.
Now it doesn’t totally cure this in every single dog but there are so many dogs that are seeing great benefits from CBD and struggling with seizures.
CBD also has anti-inflammatory properties. It’s effects are believed to be one of the reasons why this compound is used in treating so many different conditions. Inflammation can be in the joints but it can also be in other illnesses as well.
CBD also reduces anxiety and stress in some pets. Many studies have shown the CBD can help manage the symptoms from a variety of mental conditions including anxiety.
There’s also a strong body of evidence that shows that CBD is a successful antiemetic, controlling both nausea and vomiting. So if your dog gets carsick CBD can definitely help.
CBD may also slow tumor growth and can help protect against colon cancer in rats by stopping the development and growth and spread of malignant tumors. Lastly, CBD promotes homeostasis to give the body an overall sense of well-being and balance.
It helps with so many different things that many pet owners simply choose CBD not only as a medicine to treat specific illnesses, but also as a regular supplement to promote overall health and well-being.
So you might be wondering why CBD treats? Well when most people think of CBD they probably think of CBD oils and these are still the most popular form of CBD. Administering them requires you to apply a few drops under your pets tongue.
CBD treats simply offer a great alternative to oils and there are two main reasons that I want to highlight. One is convenience, and the other is specific ingredients. Some dogs just don’t like the taste of CBD oil.
If you have a picky eater then you might find it quite difficult to administer the oil under their tongue. Now if you bought some oil and you are having trouble with this, you can always just put a few drops directly on their food and this certainly works.
However, if you need a new supply of CBD, treats do make a great alternative to oils because they’re just so easy to administer. It’s as simple as giving your dog a treat.
Now the other benefit with treats is that you can often order a type which targets very specific ailments and symptoms. The reason is that CBD treats will contain other ingredients which are believed to also help a particular ailment or condition that your dog might have.
For example, calming treats may contain things like valerian root, passion flower and chamomile so these together with CBD may offer support for dogs who are stressed out and anxious.
Mobility treats may contain things like Glucosamine, Turmeric and Boswellia. These ingredients together with CBD may support relieving pain associated with inflammation.
Heart, immune care, and cognition treats may contain things like omega-3 fatty acids, elderberry, and blueberry so these are great for aging dogs.
So now we’re going to talk about dosing CBD treats. CBD dosing seems to be a very common question among pet owners. One reason I believe is that there are so many CBD oils and different brands out there and they all offer slightly different guidelines.
This can be much more confusing when pet owners buy CBD oil which is intended for humans and then try to figure out a proper dosage for their dog. Here’s the bottom line advice for dosing with CBD oil and CBD treats, just follow the guidelines from the manufacturer.
However it’s important to note that you should be buying CBD for your pet from a trusted pet CBD company. Every CBD oil has a different concentration and every CBD cookie or treat does as well. That is why it is so important buy your CBD treats from a reputable brand. The company will have very clear instructions on how much you need to give your dog and it’s really that simple.
A popular brand called Holista Pet offers CBD dog treats and each one contains 5 milligrams of CBD per treat. Holista Pet has dosage instructions for all their products and this brand tends to be a bit more technical with their dosing guidelines.
If you’re using CBD on your dog and after a couple weeks you’re just not seeing any results with the regular dose then you can certainly jump up to the stronger dose. So if you had a dog who’s about 30 pounds and you’re not seeing results then simply jump up to the stronger dose and that would be three treats per day from this particular brand using their particular treats.
If you have a larger dog that weighs over 50 pounds they recommend about 4 treats per day. If you’re gonna use CBD oils it goes the same way, Holista Pet has dosing instructions and a chart that you can reference as well.
